Detent Divot Layout
After swinging the blade open and closed several times, the detent ball scribes a line on the tang. A centerpunch mark is placed near the end of this arc.
pic61
Drilling the Detent Divot
A divot is started with a small drill. The drill size is increased to about 3/32 of an inch - until the detent ball seats properly in the blade divot

The Drilled Detent Divot
This is what the final divot looks like
pic63
Final Detent Fit
After assembling the blade and frame, the detent engagement is checked. The lock should almost touch the blade in the closed position. This ensures that the blade will be held in whenever the knife is closed.
pic64
Clip Placement
Placing the clip in position, you can see that the head of the pivot pin interferes
pic65
Notching the Clip
A small notch is ground into the pocket clip to provide adequate clearance
pic66
Shortening the Pocket Clip Screws
Using a threaded piece of material that is the same thickness as the scales, the pocket clip mounting screws are shortened to the proper length
pic67
Layout of the Pocket Clip
With the clearance notch ground, the position of the pocket clip mounting holes are marked.
pic68
Match-drilling the Pocket Clip Holes
With one screw installed, the second hole (see arrow) is to be match drilled and threaded
pic69
Final Pocket Clip Mounting
This shows the final mounted position of the pocket clip. Note that the two holes at the bottom of the handle also allow for 'tip-up' mounting, if preferred.
pic70
Radiusing the Frame
The edges of the frame are rounded by slack belt grinding
pic71
The Ground Egdes
The ground edges look like this
pic72
Sanding the Edges
The edges are then hand sanded to a smooth finish
pic73
Finishing the Lock Side Scale
The pivot pin is removed and the lock side scale is final sanded.
pic74
Layout of Holes
The 3 holes are laid out and center-punched
pic75
Drilling the Holes
The three holes are center-drilled and opened progressively with larger and larger drill bits, then chamfered.
